When people hear "cancer of the blood," most of them picture just one thing: leukemia. But the moment an actual diagnosis lands, names you've never heard before start piling up: lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and so on. All three do sit under the big umbrella of "blood cancer," but the truth is they start in different places and behave in pretty different ways. Sort them out once, and the doctor's explanation in the exam room becomes a lot less bewildering.

The blood in our bodies is made in a factory inside the bone called the marrow. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets all come from there, and if cells somewhere along the line that makes these three start growing abnormally, you get a blood cancer. Leukemia is the disease where, right at this marrow stage, the cells that mostly make white blood cells lose control and multiply explosively. Immature cells flood the marrow, so the healthy blood that should be made just isn't. That's why you bruise easily, feel tired all the time, and end up suffering even from minor infections. It splits into acute and chronic forms; acute leukemia, true to its name, comes on fast, and once the diagnosis is made you often have to start treatment right away.

Lymphoma plays out on a slightly different stage. Among the white blood cells, the star here is an immune cell called the lymphocyte, which rides through the blood circling the whole body and then gathers at stations called lymph nodes. Those are the bean-sized lumps you can feel in your neck, armpits, and groin. In lymphoma, cancer cells grow inside these lymph nodes or lymphatic tissue and form a mass. So if leukemia is a picture of cells "drifting through the blood," lymphoma is closer to a picture of cells "clumping and growing in one spot." A painless lump on the neck that lingers for ages and won't go down, or pouring out night sweats and dropping weight for no clear reason, are signals worth being suspicious about. It broadly divides into Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin types, and because there are so many varieties, even the same "lymphoma" can run wildly different courses.

Multiple myeloma is probably the most unfamiliar-sounding name of the three. This is the disease where another immune cell called the plasma cell multiplies abnormally inside the bone marrow. Plasma cells are normally the workers that make antibodies, but once they turn cancerous they crank out nothing but useless protein while wrecking the marrow. Distinctively, it progresses by gnawing away at bone, so it often starts with unexplained back pain or rib pain. It can also be discovered when a bone breaks from a trivial impact, or when a blood test turns up abnormal calcium levels or kidney function. The word "multiple" is attached because lesions appear in several places in the bone all at once.

To sum up: leukemia is the white-blood-cell-making line in the marrow going off the rails; lymphoma is lymphocytes clumping and growing in the lymph nodes; multiple myeloma is plasma cells multiplying in the marrow while tearing down bone. All three are ultimately cousins that branched off from the white blood cell lineage, but since their starting points and main symptoms differ, the tests and the treatments go their separate ways too. So it's best not to take a neighbor's case and map it straight onto your own just because you both heard the words "blood cancer."
